1. Use a Professional Summary to Frame Your Story
Start your resume with a short summary that addresses your background and your goal. This helps reframe your career break right away without drawing unnecessary attention to the gap.
2. Acknowledge the Career Break Briefly
You don’t need to hide your time at home. Include it in your work history, just like you would with any other position, and treat it with professionalism.

3. Highlight Transferable Skills
If your resume only includes work from five or ten years ago, make sure the Skills section is strong and current. Draw from both your past jobs and the skills you’ve maintained or sharpened at home.

If your last resume was crafted before your career break, update the format. Use clean fonts, remove outdated roles (anything more than 15 years ago), and only include work relevant to the position you’re applying for.
Stick to two pages max. Focus on what you’ve done in the last 10–15 years, with the most detail on your recent and relevant experience.
6. Customize for Each Job
Tailor your resume to each role. Use keywords from the job description. Emphasize the skills and experiences from past jobs, projects, or volunteer work that most closely match what the employer is looking for.
This increases your chances of passing applicant tracking systems (ATS) and showing hiring managers that you’re a strong match, regardless of your career break.
